In February, just before the snow fell, my ship came in and the 80 paintings I made while living in California were safely delivered back to my studio in Cornwall. It's only now that I have the studio space - complete with new shelving - to store them and it's really quite exciting to be reunited with these old friends after 5 years!
They were all made over a 4 year period between 2009 and 2012 when I worked in Los Angeles - both in a rural studio in Topanga Hills and later in a more urban set-up with a roll-up garage door in Mar Vista a couple of miles inland from Venice Beach, CA.
Some are small works on paper, some are on board but most are oil on canvas and some are huge - up to 7 foot tall. Happily, they have all fared well having been stored in dry conditions in Culver City (huge thanks to Fred and Christine and all at Castelli Framing for their art storage service).
Opening each package has been quite a memory trigger as the feelings I experienced when making them have come flooding back - like a piece of me is returned.
It's good to be home.
